Body Cream Product Review

Bodycology was founded in Dallas in 2003. It claims to be among the fastest growing businesses in USA, is not tested on animals, and is for women who want spa-quality-beauty-products without their price. I believe that is also inspired either by The Body Shop line or Bath & Body Works. The later is more suitable, I guess.
In Indonesia, Bodycology is taken its toll to success. The products are sold in a competitive price in a market where Bath & Body Works are listed as one cult, especially since people are getting sick with the choices of The Body Shop products. Bodycology taps mid-level consumers who want a more luxuriant alternative to local body lotion without a need to pay luxurious price. I mean, well, it will not be as cheap as local Nivea, Vaseline, or Citra body lotions. Merely I say, it is less than half of a price of The Body Shop products with almost the same quality.

Vanilla Amber Musk body cream is one of most beautiful amidst all Bodycology body cream choices. FYI, they have exactly a dozen choices of perfumed body creams.
Vanilla Amber Musk is mostly vanilla. The amber is a bit too heavy, though.
How about the texture? Now, this is getting interesting. It is for both oily and dry skin alike. It is thick and creamy with a softness that resembles whipped cream. But, when ordinary body cream tends to be warmer when being applied to skin which is a result of lanolin ingredients, Vanilla Amber Musk is cooling the skin on application. I checked the ingredients list, shea butter and aloe vera are listed. Off course, it is still not paraben-free. Well, I cannot expect mass market cream and lotion to be paraben-free alias chemical-preservatives free, can I?
Oh, by the way, I forget to tell you that this cream is scented beautifully and heavily at the same time. And, somehow, it is a bit annoying for people surrounding us. I got many comments, all were negatives. For example, dear husband said it was scented like funeral balm. Mother said it made her having a big headache. A friend gave a contempt look. (LOL) I mean we need a bit of attention in these days, right?
PS: I visited Bodycology website today and found out that Vanilla Amber Musk is discontinued. It has gotten a new name Vanilla Romance instead. I bet the smell is just the same though the picture in the tube is totally different. Out of my curiosity, as the old Vanilla Amber Musk is still sold heavily in Indonesia, does this mean that once again our country is a permissive market full of discontinued products? How about the expiry date impacting the condition of the creams? I warned you to buy this kind of product warily. Be safe!

People questioned about the originality if the underwater temple. Not so long since that temple found, the mystery of alleged underwater temple has been solved. It is not an ancient relic. That temple was built as part of a recent environmental conservation program. According to Paul M. Turley, the owner of Sea Rovers Dive Center in Pemuteran, Bali, that temple site is truly exist and the location named Taman Pura (literally means Temple garden) was created in 2005. That sea garden is extremely beautiful.
That temple is unique, consisting of ten statues and a temple structure, the project was in addition to a number of bio-wreck dive sites and a Reef Gardiners reef conservation project funded by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAid).
Taman Pura was build as some people concern about marine ecosystems and protecting reefs to survive and recover from damage caused by excessive nutrients, climate change, and physical destruction.
That temple is really an engineering feat with more than ten large stone statues resting on stone plinths and a four-meter-tall temple gateway that had been lowered to a depth of 29 meters. Even that underwater temple is not an ancient relic, still, it is worth to see. That temple is a masterpiece architecture and ornamentation of the main feature of Bali. It is a modern site with ancient touch.

Best Words in the English Language

>> Sunday, January 23, 2011

Suppose you could only hear two words. Which one solitary phrase would you prefer?
When I was fresh and young and waited anxiously to be "Grown Up"; days extended for weeks, years fossilized agonizingly into forevers, and the sight of shiny, wrapped, sparkling presents covering the kitchen table, illuminated by the glow of candles on a brightly colored cake, brought two joyful words: "Happy Birthday."
Years paraded onward until hours were crammed with binders, book covers, and ballpoint pens. Forcing my head from the soft pillow each weekday morning via the nasty braying of an alarm, I stared impatiently at the oversized, featureless, inhumane, institutional school clock as it clunked sloth-like, minute by minute, until the end of my annual imprisonment. I longed to fill my ears with the sounds of: "Summer Vacation."

The phrases that bring joy change with life's seasons. Education's victory lap culminates in "College Graduate." Career searches terminate with the contracted: "You're Hired."
Expressions of elation come from all places. Upon ratcheting up my courage enough to ask her to share her life, my love blessed me with, "I Will," which became - declared in front of friends and family - "I Do."
Children came forth and the doctor greeted us with, "Perfectly Healthy." And as grown men, I remain burst-your-buttons proud of "My Sons."
So much emotion; so few syllables.
Earlier this year, my 47-year old brother-in-law - more brother to me than in-law - went for a "Routine Procedure." Without forewarning two words inalterably stabbed through his life, "Rectal Cancer." Two more followed thereafter: "Stage Three."
Our family has felt like it has been in free-fall since that time, "Complete Upheaval." He, my sister, and their nine-year old, intelligent, loquacious, spirited son, have had their lives put "On Hold." "Feeling Powerless." "Very frightened." "Praying hard."
With "Unbearable Anticipation," I answered a phone call to hear the results of the surgery to remove his tumor and rid his liver of a lesion. She was his rock, facing her own fears, to "Be Strong" "For Him."
"The doctors said it went real well. It began as a self-conscious chuckle; a slight, faint trickle of happiness. Reinforced by the doctor's words as they slowly began to sink in, the joy and laughter merged to become a wild, freewheeling, uninhibited torrent of jubilation pouring forth from an inner place that once again dared look forward to tomorrow. Laughter, tears of joy, oft times interrupted with two words, repeated endlessly, as if what the doctor said would vanish if not restated: "Cancer Free." "Cancer Free." "Cancer Free."
There is light again.
"Thank God."

A Case Study of Lincoln Electric

According to Brian Headd and data from the U.S. Census, a more realistic figure suggests that 62% of businesses close within the first six years of operation (Headd 2). This raises the question of: What makes a successful business? By analyzing and dissecting the intricacies of Lincoln Electric's consistently stellar performance as well as paying close attention to several interesting financial pitfalls an answer can be found.

Download Exercises of National Exam for Senior High School - Indonesia Language

Value in the Individual
An organization at its core is made up of individuals and equipment. Most emphasis must be placed on the individual because he is the one that can be creative, motivated, skilled, efficient, and responsive. The proper function of management is to draw out these characteristics and encourage their growth in a productive setting. A large portion of Lincoln Electric's (LE) success can be attributed to this unique and effective management style which ultimately leads to a competitive advantage. No matter the economies of scale a huge corporation such as GE can offer, the increased productivity level of a properly motivated individual production worker can easily compensate for it. This management style is further fostered through a combination of structural, strategic, and cultural norms within LE.
Structurally, Lincoln Electric aims to flatten the hierarchical structure and eliminate nonfunctional middle management positions. To do this, LE has fostered an "open-door" policy between production workers and executives as well as created an Advisory Board that has representatives of the workers who meet with executives twice a month. Strategically, LE pushes for an integrated approach of maximizing output and reducing costs. Cost reduction will be explored at a later time, but to maximize output, Lincoln Electric draws from its motivated employees. However, these employees are not naturally motivated. This is the role of James Lincoln's Incentive Management System. This system provides a tool to motivate all employees through bonuses that redistribute a large portion of the corporation's yearly profits. Two main results stem from this redistribution. First, there is a heightened sense of ownership in the company from top to bottom because if the company as a whole does well, everyone is compensated for it respectively.
Secondly, there is increased personal performance. This performance boost is the result of a sort of quiet competition within each work group. A specific bonus pool dollar amount is allotted to each work group, and the bonuses are then distributed to the members of that group according to their quantified relative performance on the semi-annual Merit Rating. Now the Merit Rating's function is to counteract some of the pitfalls of a strategy based on speed and efficiency. Generally the result of an emphasis on speed is the sacrifice of quality and safety. Each tenet of the Merit Rating (including Dependability, Quality, Output, and Ideas/Cooperation) is a reaction to the common shortcomings of a traditional production worker. By being rewarded for attendance, work quality, and contribution of ideas on top of their piecework output leads to a well-rounded final product that is produced at the proper specifications in record time.
To further the speed of production, LE places a strong emphasis on idea generation and worker input. This allows for creative ideas and suggestions on the production process to be spread over the whole corporation. As a result, there is a strong and steady increase in LE's productivity per worker. The Merit system also serves to increase coordination by rewarding teamwork while at the same time introducing an element that is historically known to be one of the greatest efficiency drivers of all time: competition. Since there are only a certain number of possible Merit Points available, competition over these points between members of the work group exists. This comprehensive Incentive Management System unifies the direction of the workforce and leads to a balanced and efficient set of goals that yields a strong competitive advantage over rival companies. Lincoln Electric has found the perfect process, but is it a universal process that can apply overseas?
Cost Reduction and Market Expansion
The blind pursuit of profit can easily lead to poor decision-making. That is why the means to creating income is vital. The question is how does a company increase margins? Two simple choices exist: Reduce costs, or increase output through expansion and efficiency. Lincoln Electric has identified this dynamic duo and integrated it into the general business strategy. To reduce costs, LE uses a variety of strong business tactics. There are three shifts on equipment, so it is constantly rotated and allows for no downtime on equipment. This prevents having excess capacity which leads to unnecessary overhead costs. Also, LE has aimed to flatten the structure of the company and eliminate levels of the organization that detract from the established open communication environment between workers and management. This reduces salary expenses and ultimately increases profit margin.
The concept of guaranteed employment is another brilliant cost-reducing idea of James F. Lincoln. The cost of retaining employees on payroll is less than the cost to recruit and train motivated and creative workers. As a result, during downturns, LE did not layoff workers but would retrain and deploy them elsewhere in the company. This would encourage loyalty to the company and highly reduce employee turnover, once again reducing cost to Lincoln Electric through a variety of quantitative as well as qualitative means. Lastly, there is the concept of limited benefits enhanced profits. This enhancement reflected back to bonuses and worker's piecework compensation which put more control in the hands of the individual with the allotment of money and compensated for their lack of benefits. LE's approach to maximizing output was explored previously, and the general consensus was a focus on developing a creative, motivated, and efficient production worker who consistently puts out more effort than a similar production worker in another firm. Another option to increase output is expansion into other markets.
Lincoln Electric first expanded to Canada by opening a manufacturing plant in Toronto in 1925. About twenty years later, LE Canada adopted the Incentive Management System (IMS) including its annual bonus and piecework facets. Due to the similar cultural norms between the U.S. and Canada, this adjustment flowed smoothly. However, poor decision-making led to this application of the IMS in other markets, including Europe and South America. Friction resulted because the cultural values of the production worker are different. Also, government regulation in Germany and Brazil led to major adjustments that undermined LE's incentive efforts. In Europe, workers valued benefits such as vacation time over annual bonuses. It was discovered that annual bonuses did little to increase individual production efficiency without the piecework aspect of the IMS. Piecework was in fact illegal in Germany.
Obviously if more planning or research had been done, this crucial fact would have been discovered and LE would have avoided expansion into Germany. The root of Lincoln Electric's troubles began with the quick expansionist mindset of George Willis. The main trouble was the speed of the expansion. LE incurred long-term financial debt for the first time in the corporation's history. The added interest expense and permanent liability hurt future income statements heavily. A study of Lincoln Electric's Consolidated Income Statement as well as the Balance Sheet reveals some interesting financial facts.
Starting in 1987, LE had no long-term debt. As the Income Statement suggests, the height of this long-term debt matches with the first net loss of Lincoln Electric. Failure to control spending and keep costs low (the historical competitive advantage of LE) undermined the desire to increase output through expansion. This analysis of cost-reduction and market expansion raises several questions. How can Lincoln Electric prevent similar losses in the future? How closely correlated is the 1992-93 net loss with geographic expansion? What can Lincoln Electric do in the future to maintain its historical rapid growth and competitive advantage?
Recommendations
So decision time has come about Indonesia. Is Indonesia ready and willing to match up with Lincoln Electric's strategy, or will it repel the incentives that are the key competitive differentiators? After analysis of Indonesia's economic and financial situation, I recommend slow expansion into their welding market. The current distribution network of Tira and SSHJ should be altered so that it can be refined and expanded. Though smaller, SSHJ's strategy coincides with LE's more so than Tira's strategy. I suggest using only SSHJ salespeople because they highlight the cost-savings and benefits of Lincoln Electric's products while aiming to draw in new customers via LE's name recognition and reputation for high-quality. LE should utilize cooptation to provide the company with local contacts and recommendations so that previous errors in incentive management can be addressed and altered. Exact details of my recommended Indonesian expansion are specified in the following list:
o Combination of piecework and salary with a salary representing a figure slightly lower than the average Indonesian manufacturing worker wage of 250,000 rupiah.
o Guaranteed employment would exist through the understanding that economic change would not threaten a workers job. Job security would encourage intense loyalty and be a strong factor in building a consistent workforce.
With this comprehensive entry strategy into the Indonesian market, I feel that Lincoln Electric will only be met with success. This strategy encompasses the strongest aspects of LE's Cleveland incentive system while tailoring it to be profit-maximizing in the specific Indonesian environment. Gillespie should have no worries as he presents these plans to his colleagues because the foundations of this plan are rooted in the historically successful traditions of Lincoln Electric, and have been adjusted to compensate for the differences that hindered previous global expansion.

Importance of Structure in English Grammar

Very often, when conveying your thoughts in writing using the English language is also a test of your intelligence. This is because you are judged by how convincing you are able put your message across. Learning English grammar is therefore important in proving your intelligence. There are many tests of such intelligence you need to be wary of.
One common grammar rule that even native speakers forget is in showing possession. This is a common theme in the English language. When showing possession with "your", be careful not to be confused with "you're" or "you are". For example, in this sentence, "The library book is not yours, so you're reminded to take good care of it." One way of remembering this rule is to replace the contraction with the phrase "you are" to check if it fits correctly.

Download Exercises of National Exam for Senior High School - English Language

Another common mistake is the use of the words "effect" and "affect". In fact, even professionals sometimes get tripped up on the correct usage of these words. Just be wary that "affect" is a verb and is therefore the action to be done in a sentence, such as "Your diet affects your health." On the other hand, "effect" is a noun or adjective, and used in a sentence such as "The effect of a poor diet is poor health."
This leads us to two more words which are commonly confused with each other for learners of English. The word "there" is used to indicate a location, while "their" is used to show ownership. However, this one is easy to remember. "Good" and "well" are two words that are often taught wrongly in English language schools. For example, "I am feeling good," sounds normal and is common among speakers of English. "Well" is a noun, and so it should be used to replace "good" in this case. So, "I am feeling well" is the proper response to the question "How are you feeling?"
One of the biggest stumbling blocks for foreign learners of the English language is the proper usage of "a" and "an". We use "an" before a word that begins with a vowel like "egg". This seems easy enough, but gets problematic with words like "hour", which doesn't begin with a vowel. Only when it is pronounced do we understand why the word "an" is required.
Although learning the English language can sometimes be frustrating, with patience and practice it can be easily grasped within a year. It just requires practice, practice and more practice.

Math Fluency

According to the Merriam Webster's Dictionary, to be fluent is "to be capable of moving with ease and grace, effortlessly smooth and flowing, and showing mastery of a subject or skill." It could also be defined as the ability to use mathematics accurately, efficiently, and effortlessly.
What is math fluency?
Math fluency means knowing the right method to correctly solve a mathematical problem with ease and in a relatively short period of time. The more fluent a person becomes in math, the better and smoother he/she becomes in accurately applying mathematical concepts to real life situations. Reaching good fluency in math requires proper, meaningful and consistent practice. Knowing how to apply a formula to solve a math problem does not necessarily mean one is good in math. It takes much more than applying a math formula to be considered good. Research shows that to be fluent in math, children should be able to accurately answer math questions within 2 seconds.

Building Blocks
It is very important to completely understand the basic building blocks of math in order to achieve mastery of the subject. One should have mastered the concepts of adding, subtracting, multiplication and division before moving on to higher math levels. Although one understands how to perform calculation and has some fluency in math facts, he/she still needs continuous practice. Understanding is essential for math fluency, but not enough; practice and repetition is what creates perfection.
If you are able to establish a link between the math operations and build on them as you advance, you should be able to master the subject with ease.

Economic Development

Readers and viewers must know the basic concepts and principles of economic development. After this, will be economic problems and development strategies that is applied in this article. The next part is development policies and programs that has something to do with monetary and fiscal policies in. It will be discovered as a process for an economic planning towards developmental model. Last but not the least, will be the major issues in economic development.
According to Fajardo in his book, "Economic Development defines as a progressive process of improving human conditions such as reduction or elimination of poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, inequality, disease and exploitations. To understand this meaning carefully, it is an interaction of different factors". The example of this is investing a rice harvest per hectare in your designated ranch, there are various inputs that are combined like fertilizers, insecticides, irrigation, technology, and many other things related to this example.

Understanding Geography

From time immemorial, man has wondered at the grand spectacle called the sea, sometimes placid as a sheet of water, sometimes terrific as hell with giant waves lashing the shores. Always a challenge to those who wanted to conquer it and a boon to pirates who made fortunes by mastering the sea. Here the animals are strange but a source of food for millions. Until Columbus discovered the new world, no one thought that it ever existed!
There are mountains and rivers and valleys in the oceans just as in the continents, but text books seldom high light it. To know the true nature of the real earth, we must remove her cloths, the sands and soil and water covering her body! Let us start from Quito in Ecuador in Africa. A little distance westward, we see a big depression which we call the Atlantic Ocean in which the ridge is visible. Farther away, we see a plateau called the America. At the west end of this high land is a mountain, like a back bone. Then comes a very low land stretching westward, almost half the surface of the earth in width. This vast plain is called the Pacific ocean.

A mountain peak is just near Africa, Galapagos Island, lat 1s-long 90 w. Further west is a mountain peak, Gilbert Is. Then comes Borneo etc, all mountains, before reaching the African east coast.
The lowest plain Pacific, Atlantic at a higher level, then America and Eurasia at the highest level, all a continuous, not necessarily single, rock system. Caves and tunnels, volcanoes and river like channels, gold and diamond deposits, oil and natural gas etc. etc. are all there irrespective of the level of the terrain.

Sociology Study

The Census is a sociology study that provides an accurate and detailed count of the population that is used for apportionment of the United States House of Representatives as well as subsequent redistricting of legislative bodies in respective states and at the local level. The Census also determines how over $400 billion dollars annually will be allocated to states and communities.
Data from the Census about how our communities and states are changing and adapting are critical to many planning decisions. These planning decisions include things such as emergency preparedness and disaster recovery, neighborhood improvements, public health, education, senior services, transportation, job training centers, senior centers and much more. This sociology study affects almost every part of our community planning.

Census data helps the administration of countless government programs that guide local and state economic development in decision-making processes. This sociology study helps these administrations determine priorities for investment in public infrastructure and allows them to identify the needs of major metropolitan areas. This sociology study, the Census, also helps determine how most states reapportion their legislature.
In order to conduct this sociology study, the United States government will create roughly 1.4 million temporary jobs throughout the next year to fill a variety of census positions throughout the country.
Participation in this sociology study is easy, important and safe. All data received by the Census Bureau is strictly confidential to ensure that data respondents are protected. The Census Bureau is unable to share respondents' answers to this sociology study with anyone including the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.
Local and federal courts may fine individuals, who fail to respond to this sociology study, up to $5,000. The bureau encourages response by explaining the importance of the census and the questions asked and how they will benefit local communities
As a part of the census, more than 130 million addresses across America will receive a census from in March of 2010 in an effort to accurately count every individual in the United States. This includes people of all rages, ethnic groups, ages, citizens and non-citizens. This data will guide local and federal government in decisions regarding services provided such as where to build new hospitals, roads, schools, senior centers and more.
The Census is mandated by the United States Constitution and is conducted every 10 years. The census is one of the largest efforts that our local and federal governments undertake. Data from this study are very important because they are used to reapportion the United States House of Representatives as well as determine how to allocate more than $400 billion annually in federal funding to local, tribal and state governments for services that affect their local communities.

Speaking and Listening to English

Many people throughout the world are learning English due to the fact that English can be used everywhere for communication. However, lots of them haven't reached the level that they can use English as a global language fluently to communicate with people from other parts of the world. How could they improve their English level?
As for this problem, you need to consider at least two aspects in your learning process. One is speaking, the other is listening. At first, let's look at English speaking.

Download Exercises of National Exam for Senior High School - English Language

Based on some basic English knowledge like pronunciation, vocabulary and basic grammar, you can start speaking English. You can try to make up some very easy sentences slowly in the beginning in case that you may make very stupid mistakes while talking with others. But you shouldn't be too careful to be afraid of speaking any sentences. You have to bear in mind on the other hand that everybody makes mistakes. Really the first step for you to take is to open your mouth to speak a different language in spite of others' laughter and your own shyness.
Certainly if you think possible, you can use some language learning software to help you speak. To be honest, it is a very nice way to try, but you must know that you can only imitate the standard pronunciation and learn how the software organizes different suitable topics for consistent speaking. Generally, using this software, you can really understand how to speak English in your way.
Then you must keep listening to English everyday. When you listen to the native English speakers, you need to keep very focused, trying to catch every English word he or she says. On the one hand, you need to learn more things about English culture; on the other hand, you have to enlarge your vocabulary. Really there might be some other kinds of problems biting you, but you need to pull them out one by one and solve them afterwards.
In fact, this paragraph is something about intensive English listening, but you need to do extensive English listening on the other hand. This time you don't need to understand everything of your target passage, you only need to generalize the meaning of it and you can learn some good traditional English expressions incidentally.
In a word, you must save no energy to learn this new language for your future use.

Geothermal Projects in Indonesia

Update on renewable energy investment in Indonesia. There is an interesting article in the Jakarta Post on Geothermal investment. Indonesia has developed only less than a thousand MW of geothermal power although it is estimated to have nearly one-third of the world's geothermal resources. A research from the ministry of mineral resources mentioned that there are 252 geothermal locations which have been identified along a volcanic belt extending from Sumatera, Java, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi until Maluku. These heat resources has the total potential of 27 GWe, which puts Indonesia as the biggest geothermal potential country in the world!

A Jakarta Post op ed told that (i) tax uncertainties and (ii) legal uncertainties are among the frontlines of investment barriers. Geothermal investment is really a high risk-high return investment scheme which involves huge exploration and exploitation funds. It is never intended as a short term investment. Investors are afraid that their contracts are not being honoured.
I'll give a little comment on the legal barriers. Generally contract observance remained high. Business partners will think twice before deciding to bailout from a contract since litigation costs are too high. The problem stems not from observance of the contract but mainly due to regional autonomy. How much share will the regions receive are the hot issue. There has been a case where Garut regional government requests Chevron and the Central Government to disburse concession money for their region. They even threatened to invalidate Article 41 of the Geothermal Law to the Constitutional Court. Article 41 governs a transitory provision which stipulates that all contracts prior to the entry into force of the Geothermal Law will remain valid. Under this transitory provision, regions don't receive any money. Of course, their attempts to invalidate the article are futile.
During the old days, people will have to deal with state owned enterprise such as PLN or Pertamina. It wouldn't be good if after a few years of investing the license given by regional government is revoked by the central, or a license given by central government is revoked by the central. In any event, although the regions are granted more power, it is always important to asks some sort of condonation from the central government.

Green Chemistry

Chemical manufacturing has seen large advances in so-called green chemistry in recent years. The term "green chemistry" has come to embrace some well-defined concepts in chemical manufacturing. As enunciated by Paul Anastas, considered by many to be the father of green chemistry," a chemical process is greener when it meets certain well-defined criteria. Among those characteristics that enable a process to be called greener, many are commonsense goals. Using solvents that are more biodegradable is preferred. Similarly, a process that reduces overall waste that includes all inputs into the process such as solvents, raw materials, and process aids. In addition, a green chemical process uses less energy and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions. The greenness f a process is summarized by a term called the "E-Factor" which measures the total amount of solvents, reagents, and consumables used in kilograms and divides it by the kilograms of final product produced.

Download Exercises of National Exam for Senior High School - Chemistry

One technology that has become a central part of green chemistry is biocatalysis. Using enzymes, which are proteins that accelerate chemical reactions, has immediate advantages in turning a chemical process green. Enzymes are nature's catalysts, present in every living organism to carry out a wide range of chemical reactions. As such, enzymes are completely biodegradable. Increasingly chemical companies are looking to biocatalysis to improve the sustainability f their manufacturing. Nowhere have enzymes had a larger impact recently than in the pharmaceutical industry. Many drug substances are difficult to synthesize, requiring multiple steps, large amounts of solvents, and extensive purifications. Using enzymes as catalysts can improve the purity and reduce the amount of organic solvent needed, resulting in a much greener overall manufacturing process.
A good example of the impact of biocatalysis on pharmaceutical manufacturing is the recent announcement by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer about changes in its process for the production of pregabalin, the active ingredient in its $3 billion per year drug Lyrica. In 2007 Pfizer replaced a classical chemical processing step with a more efficient enzymatic step. The result is a 90% reduction in solvent, used a 50% reduction in starting material needed, and commensurately large reactions in other reagents and chemical inputs. The E-factor of the process was reduced from 86 to 9.
Biocatalysis has many attractive features in the context of green chemistry, and its impact will become significantly larger in coming years.

Career Options for Biology Graduates

Having a Biology degree opens doors to many career choices. For a person with a Master's or Doctorate degree, and is interested in working in laboratory settings, they can become research biologists. For those with a Bachelor's degree and wishes to start out with some experience in this field, they can opt to become lab technicians as they have gained research experiences during their college degree. The Bachelor's degree basically provides a good Biology entry background so that they can enter graduate school into a more specialized field. Research biologists can study in detail anything that is alive, although they would usually have a specialized field they ventured into, such as botany, zoology, or even microbiology.

If teaching and biology is the passion, one can become a biology or science teacher or lecturer. In order to pursue this career, they will need to attain a teaching license in addition to their Biology degree. Certainly, the Biology degree salary for a Biology teacher will be higher than one without that specialized education.
A career option for animal lovers would be that of a veterinarian. Veterinarians are doctors for animals. Communication classes can also come in handy as they will constantly need to be able to talk to the patient's owners about their condition and how to promote recovery. Veterinary school will take another four years after their biology degree school.
On the other hand, if one biologist has a knack for writing, they could become science writers. Science writers typically research and inform their target audience online or on print about scientific discoveries, facts, theories, or anything related at all. In a way, they are the ones who can relay scientific terms to the laypeople, or if they are writing for the niche field, write to provide informational to the readers.
There are many other jobs available for biology degree holders. Nevertheless, the biology degree salary will vary according to the type of job one works as. But the common trend is that those with higher degrees like a Master's or Doctorate will have higher salary. Regardless, work hard into your interest and you will definitely go far in the field.

What is Reality in Physics?

Reality used to be a concept dealt with by philosophy and not science. This was changed by Galileo, when he divided physical phenomena into two classes. This independent existence freed them from the vagaries of individual observations Such subjective observations could be affected by health, ability to concentrate and a host of other personal factors, which affected the "secondary qualities" and made them unfit for scientific study. These secondary qualities did require the presence of a person and applied, in Galileo's opinion, to all observations made by the senses of smell, touch, hearing and taste.

Download Exercises of National Exam for Senior High School - Mathematics

Galileo's primary qualities were very few in number and Rene Descartes later reduced them to just two, matter and motion. These qualities were independent of people. Their reality was therefore objective. On the other hand, the secondary qualities, which needed the presence of a person to register them through the senses mentioned, were subjective. These two realities, subjective and objective, were deeply embedded in philosophical traditions, dating back thousands of years to the ancient Greeks and beyond. In these philosophies, all physical phenomena in our world of nature, which needed our senses for their perception, were of merely subjective reality. This reality was considered very inferior to the objective reality of the divine world, which of course was beyond the direct perception of our ordinary senses and thus also beyond the need of our human presence to exist. This divine world was not just a world of religious belief in these philosophies. It was a world of real existence and the realm of all "true" knowledge. It could be accessed by people specially trained for such contact, such as oracles, seers and mystics.
Galileo's revolutionary thinking can now be fully appreciated. He had the audacity to take the concept of objective reality, as a property of the divine world only, and tack it on to his two primary qualities of matter and motion, which were properties of the lowly world of nature. Matter and motion were now the exclusive subjects of his new science, physics. They formed the basis of all Newton's great synthesis of natural laws. They were the foundation concepts of a philosophy, scientific determinism, and of a model of the world that ruled physics until the 1920s, when it had to be abandoned.
The consequences of Galileo's actions in these matters were quite extraordinary and have lasted to this day. While he himself was careful to limit objective reality to only his two primary qualities of matter and motion, as time went on scientists began to treat all natural phenomena, perceived by all our senses, as having an independent existence of their own. This allowed them to postulate that the history of nature was quite independent of the history of man, so that it could be extrapolated to the earliest periods of this earth's existence, long before the appearance on the scene of man. It may seem extraordinary to us today, but this method of perceiving the geological history of the world is no older than Galileo. Before him, at least in Christian times, the world started in 4004 BC. This independent matter was now perceived as the primal substance, from which everything else that has appeared on earth, such as life, feeling and consciousness, has evolved by means of purely natural, random processes.
Objective reality disappeared from physics in the 1920s, when scientific determinism, based on the total predictability of cause and effect, had to be abandoned as it no longer represented the facts discovered by the new branches of physics, especially quantum mechanics, which required the inclusion of Heisenberg's Principle of Uncertainty. For the last eighty or more years, therefore, physics has operated on the basis of subjective reality only. It no longer recognizes Galileo's division of natural phenomena into two classes: for modern physics, all perceived natural phenomena are of a subjective nature, because they require the apparatus of our senses. Galileo's attempt to make some "qualities" of matter objective has simply been ignored by modern physics, which is not interested in philosophical errors of hundreds of years ago. As the divine world was eliminated by science, so its objective reality has also been removed. In this, modern physics has recognized that Galileo made a fundamental error when saying that his primary qualities did not need the presence of a person. Matter and motion still had to be perceived in order to be dealt with by science. The sense of sight was therefore involved and the sense of sight is still a physical sense and thus subjective.
All these developments in physics have left loose ends dangling about. If matter is now no longer considered objective, must we not alter our assumptions about the very early eons of the earth's existence, before the appearance of man? Philosophically speaking, how does the absence of objective reality affect us in our relationship with nature? If we only accept subjective reality now in our science, does this not mean that we must regard ourselves as the creators of the world? What, for instance, can be said about the reality of a string particle? This particle is defined as the ultimate, irreducible matter particle. Our sense structure is not built to perceive an object of only one dimension anywhere in our physical world. So we cannot call the string particle subjectively real, like other physical phenomena. But if matter is considered to be subjectively real, should not the origin of matter, the ultimate, irreducible particle of matter, also be real? Here again, the absence of objective reality in physics today is becoming a problem.
Subjective reality is becoming interesting to physics in another line of investigation being followed. The old question, posed by Bishop Berkeley and others, about the existence of the world if we are not there to perceive it, can now be investigated scientifically. The results of two such investigations have recently been published, one conducted in Japan and the other in Canada. Both used photons as the particles being observed and then not observed. The last part was achieved mathematically by not completing the procedures under observation. The Japanese experimenter called this result "preposterous".
Galileo's Shadow is a book that deals with these conflicting concepts of reality within physics. It suggests a way to reincorporate objective reality back into science, as well as many other problems in physics that are becoming increasingly urgent. One of the aims of the book is to make physics accessible again to a broader audience, where it used to be in the age of Newton, when ordinary educated people could understand its broad concepts even if they were not mathematical geniuses.

Decoding the English Language

Last night I was walking through my neighbourhood and passed a fruit and vegetable store. They had a sign out front advertising a real bargain: "Cherry Special, $3.49 a pound."
For a moment I amused myself by imagining they were selling a giant cherry. But of course it was just a case of someone not understanding the difference between singular and plural; what they meant was "cherries," plural, not "cherry," singular.
It made me think, not for the first time, how confusing the English language can be. And not just for non-native English speakers. All of us can find ourselves struggling to understand aspects of this tricky language.

Download Exercises of National Exam for Senior High School - English Language

There's a poem circulating on the internet called "English Is A Confusing Language" that sums it up perfectly - this is just an excerpt:
"We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice."
So funny, so true. There are areas of the English language that simply are not logical. So how do you make sense of English, and use the correct words in your writing? Here's the bitter pill we all must swallow: sometimes you just have to memorize.
1. Plural versus Singular: Many plurals are formed by adding -s or -es to the singular noun. House becoming houses, (not "hice!") for example. But singulars that end with a "y," preceded by a consonant, become plural by using "ies." Thus more than one cherry becomes cherries.
2. One Word, Various Meanings: There are many examples of this. Take the word "bar" for example. It might mean something you leap over if you are horse. What I recommend when one encounters a word with various meanings is to use it in a sentence, so that the context helps to make the meaning clear. For example: "There was a bar at the door to the pub, but I leapt over it so that I could get a drink at the bar. 3. Same Pronunciation or Spelling, Various Meanings (a.k.a. Homonyms): A classic example - "sight, cite, and site." If you see something, it's in sight. If you wish to quote something, you wish to "cite" it. If you are camping, chances are you have a camping "site." Some people are so fascinated by homonyms that they keep lists of them.
If there are aspects of the English language that confuse you, please do drop me a line by commenting, and I can take it up on the blog. Meanwhile, I leave you with this example of homonyms from another neighbourhood stroll, when I passed a café with a sly sense of humour. The board outside their door advertised the following special: "Leek and Pea Soup." Try explaining that to someone just learning English!

Indonesia's Facebook Generation

>> Monday, January 17, 2011

Few people have heard of Indonesia,. With the exception of the fabled Island of Bali, and bad news of rare terrorist attacks, and occasional natural disasters, yet Indonesians are the forth largest users of the social network site- Facebook. Which has become something of a controversy, and to many a social norm in a Country of over 225 million people.
Social networking is nothing new to Indonesians, indeed "Social Networking" is an intricle part of both traditional, and modern Indonesian life. In a developing nation, that has largely escaped the current World recession, this tradition of "Social Networking" has gone on-line.

A new generation of net savvy Indonesians, who mainly live in the Countries urban centers have embraced Facebook, as their own. Posting pictures which Indonesians all love to take on expanding profiles, and taking advantage of the chat facilities which most Indonesians love to spend their time doing.
So Why has Facebook taken off in one of the most unlikeliest Countries?
Modern Indonesia has been transformed from a rural society, to an urban society within a period of only a few generations. Leaving families and friends across Indonesia, both separated and many say permanently mobile.
This has created a wealthy urban elite, and a would-be generation of migrants, that embrace cheap technology simply needed to keep in touch with each other across a nation of over 18.000 Islands.
The de-regulation of the nations Telecommunications Industry, and open competition between internet, and mobile phone providers have created cheaper technology for millions of ordinary Indonesians, who have embraced the opportunity to keep in touch, gossip and make new friends on-line.
Modern Indonesians also like to look down on their "rural roots," and Facebook is one way to look sophisticated and modern, in a society where often appearances are more important than substance. Hence the countless photographs posted on Indonesian Facebook profiles, that often show the trappings of wealth most Indonesians can not afford, outside the Cities; days in the Mall, trendy Cafes or even upscale Hotels and Restaurants.
"Social Networking," is also important in a Country with no real social safety nets. Dating is also an important part of Indonesian life, were most of the Countries population is still under the age of 25, and mainly Female. So Facebook is also a cheap Dating Site for many Indonesians, who often flirt on-line, or search for an offline partner. Particularly when many Indonesians have two jobs and spend most of their time traveling too or from work in Cities like Jakarta.

Working As an English Teacher in China

With the job situation so bad in the UK, many people are looking outside of the country to seek employment. Some are considering teaching English abroad as an option and some might even look as far as China for work. In this article I want to pass on some information and a little advice about working as a teacher in China and what you can expect from a life here.

Download Junior High School Exam Drill for English

Qualifications.
You will need to have a teaching certificate in teaching English and this comes in the form of a TEFL certificate - Teaching English as a Foreign Language. However, you are not going to get a good job with just that; for many teaching positions here you will need a degree, especially for jobs in the big cities like Shanghai and Beijing. Of course if you are already a teacher, then it will be much easier for you. It is possible to find teaching posts with just a TEFL but they will be in lesser schools in the main cities or in schools in other smaller cities.
Online TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
There are many courses you can take to gain a TEFL certificate and many online courses too. I took an online course from a company called i-to-i; it was 120 hours. However I wasn't impressed with the course. Firstly I found that it didn't really teach me much about teaching and secondly I didn't consider the online tutor to be that helpful. My wife Crystal however, who is Chinese and a qualified English teacher, took at the same time an ITTT International course. She thought it might come be useful one day, especially if were to go to Europe. The ITTT course was more expensive than mine and it turned out to be much better.
She learnt the subject in greater depth and had better support from her online tutor. A word of warning however about TEFL courses; if your knowledge of grammar is shaky, you will either need some help or will need to embark on some further study. I have to confess that my knowledge of English grammar was very poor indeed and ironically it was my Chinese wife who was able to help me through the course. It does seem amazing that one can speak, read and write reasonably well in English and yet have a poor knowledge as to how one's own language works. I guess you could say we native speakers learn our language organically, whereas foreign students gain it in a more regimented way through text books and concentrated study. I can write better than my Chinese wife and of course speak better but she knows much more than me about pronouns, adjectives and passive voice etc.
Teaching oral English however doesn't rely on explaining grammar but it is advisable to know more than your students. If a student were to ask you a question to which you cannot answer, you are going to look pretty stupid! What's more your students will happily tell their teachers about your apparent lack of knowledge
City based TEFL courses overseas.
Many companies offer courses in the country where you are planning to teach. Zunyi is where I have been teaching these past three years. Apparently they had a great time in Beijing, visiting the bars every evening and they got to see some of the great tourist attractions but financially their six months in China was a loser.
You will have to pay a tidy sum for the overseas course and secondly you will not get paid the going rate at whatever school you end up at. Many schools however will pay for one return flight every year or pay a completion bonus of a similar amount. The lesson is - if you allow others to make all your arrangements, it will cost you a lot of money.
Types of teaching positions
If you have a degree and teaching experience, you'll probably be able to get a good job in a university/college teaching whatever subject you are experienced in, for example English literature, economics etc.. Educational institutions often have specific names such as Zunyi Medical College but that doesn't mean the only subjects they teach are medical; you will find here, students majoring in English and other subjects not related to medicine. The school I teach at is grandly called the Aerospace School but the only subject that could be remotely connected with this is a metalwork workshop; so don't be put off by the name of the school.
If you have a degree but don't have teaching experience you can still find a reasonably well paid job but you will only be expected to teach oral English. Chinese English teachers reach a very high standard in grammar, probably higher than most folk in the UK; therefore it is unlikely you will be asked to teach it. What's more, you need to speak Chinese in order to explain the grammar rules clearly and it is impossible to do so without speaking Chinese. If you don't have a TEFL certificate but not a degree you can still find a job teaching oral English in either a middle school, junior school or kindergarten but your salary will be lower.
In china there are universities and colleges which are basically the same thing; senior middle schools (students 15-18 years), junior middle schools (students 12 -15 years), primary schools (6 - 12) and kindergarten (aged 3 - 6, although some children start much younger) and all will teach English as part of their curriculum. Some kindergarten in the big cities will employ native English teachers but of course these are very informal classes and you should have a Chinese classroom assistant to help you. Don't expect a Chinese assistant in schools for older students. Some schools are privately owned and some are state run. My school was previously state run but is now privately owned.
Salary
Whatever school you teach at in China, you're not going to make a lot of money. However, you can have a comfortable life here because generally the cost of living is much lower. In the bigger cities, someone with a degree and perhaps a background in teaching can earn around 12,000 rmb a month which currently is about £1,200. However other teaching jobs in the big cities start at around 8000 rmb. If you go to one of the smaller cities you can expect to earn a lot less but it depends on what type of school you teach at. At a private English language school which teaches mainly at weekends and evenings, you will earn more than at middle or junior school. So many students take extra classes at the weekend or in the evening and their parents have to pay extra for this. At a large and successful privately owned English school in Zunyi, the teachers get around 8000 rmb which is a very good salary here. In contrast, at a state owned middle school, the teachers there earn a mere 2500 but there is a good reason for this difference. The two teachers who work there gained their qualification in Beijing through i to i, prior to coming to this city. The school will be paying a lot more for their services because they will also be paying the TEFL organisation and agents. So as you can see, salaries can vary greatly.
Accommodation
Many schools will offer accommodation as part of the package and of course accommodation will vary greatly. I am very fortunate, I have a lovely apartment with two bedrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, shower room with western loo, TV DVD and computer, and the rent/electricity is paid for by my school. However the teachers I referred to earlier have a single room in an office building within the school complex, and the shower room with squatting toilet they have to share with other members of staff. What makes their accommodation even worse is that the school imposed an eleven o'clock curfew for them to be in during the week and the school bell was outside the door and even at weekends they had no rest from it. Having said that, if you come with an agency it's going to pretty difficult to find out any concrete information in advance. Bear in mind that some schools will not pay for your accommodation and you will have to find it yourself and of course you will need help with this.
Last year (2009), I made enquiries through an agent to get a teaching job in Shenzhen. The agent also offered me a small room in a shared apartment with three other people (teachers) and the price for this one room was 1700 rmb. So with higher costs of food and travel, I would have been no better off and my living accommodation would have been much worse - I declined the offer.
Cost of living in China
Like any country, the cost of living varies greatly between city and provincial areas. Salaries are higher but so too are living costs in a big city. I can't give you prices of things in other cities but I can give you some relative examples from the city I live in. A simple meal based around rice or noodles will cost 5 rmb (50p) whereas a decent meal for four people at a simple restaurant will cost 60 - 100 and at an expensive restaurant, 200 - 300. Taxi fares start at 5 rmb for quite a long distance and all bus fares in the city are 1 rmb. So although my salary is low, I can live very cheaply indeed. In fact because I spend so little and don't use a credit card or have a loan to pay, this is the first time in my life that I could actually save money on a regular basis. It is wonderful to have no debt and no worries about money.
Other considerations
Internet: The Chinese government strictly controls what people can view on the Internet, especially adult sites. At the time of writing you can't use Facebook and YouTube, and much to my annoyance even Blogger is blocked. I created a lovely blog about Chinese tea and now I can't use it. If you can't live without Facebook or YouTube then don't come to China.
Food: In the bigger cities, you can dine on a wide variety of western foods but expect to pay much more for this. If you are a western fast food fan, you'll find more outlets than you can shake a stick at in the bigger cities but in the smaller cities you won't find many. Large cities will have supermarkets like Walmart and Carrefour and even in Zunyi there are two Walmarts, which sell a small selection of western foods.
Entertainment: In the big cities you will find all the entertainment you could hope for and of course western bars selling western beers and spirits but expect to pay high prices for these. In smaller cities like Zunyi, you'll be lucky to find any.
Language: Don't expect everyone in Beijing or Shanghai to speak English because although every student in China will learn some English, most will not use it and forget it. Today English is the second language taught at schools but forty years ago it was Russian. If you want to be independent, and you may well have to be, you will have to try and learn some Chinese. However, every city and region has its own dialect. The national language is mandarin and is taught in all schools but different dialects are spoken in every city. Don't expect to learn mandarin and then understand a conversation in Shanghai because there they speak Shanhaiese.
Cultural differences: See my article Culture Shock - A westerner living in China.
Finally:
If you want to come and live and work in China, my advice is put aside your thoughts of home and accept life as it is here. Don't compare life at home with life in China; if you do you'll only get deeply frustrated and want to go home. Life in China can drive you up the wall at times but there are many wonderful aspects about living here also which may not at first be apparent. There are so many things to consider before you accept a job as an English teacher in China, too much to write about here - read my other articles in my blog for more information about life in China.
